Carbon Energy's unique UCG technology

Carbon Energy's wholly owned UCG technology developed in conjunction with CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world. www.csiro.au

The technology was developed following the assessment of 50 years of operational data and 10 years of research. Additionally Carbon Energy have access to the operational experience of successful UCG trials at Rocky Mt 1, Rawlins in the US and Huntly in NZ.

The research has led to the development of a suite of modelling tools that can be used in different aspects of UCG, including;

  • Site selection and site optimisation
  • UCG design tools and modelling packages
  • Environmental control techniques, process design and control models

The focus of the Carbon Energy's Bloodwood Creek trial has been how to control the chemical reactions occurring underground to be able to maintain a consistent gasification front and produce a higher quality, greenhouse friendlier gas, in commercial quantities, with the highest levels of environmental performance.

Syngas - What is it and what can it be used for?

"Syngas" or Synthesis gas is defined as gas consisting of hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO) generally desired at a ratio close to 2:1 H2:CO. Syngas is a fundamental chemical building block to produce a range of chemicals used in the manufacture of Fertiliser, explosives, plastics, transport fuels and is a critical step towards the production of clean coal electricity.
